In order to objectively record and scientifically evaluate the socio-economic benefits obtained from the construction of key forestry projects, the State Forestry Administration has started the annual tracking and monitoring of the socio-economic benefits of key forestry projects since 2003. Four key projects for the protection of natural forest resources, returning farmland to forests, the control of wind and sand sources in Beijing and Tianjin, and the protection of wild animals and plants and the construction of nature reserves have been monitored for 14 consecutive years, covering 175 counties in 27 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) 37 state-owned forest industry enterprises, 79 state-owned forest farms, 40 state-level nature reserves, 278 villages and 1,656 farmers. Since 2003, a collection of monitoring data has been compiled each year, and 14 types have been published.
